This two-bedroom retreat intends to become an extensive shadow where coexistence with the intensity of the Pisco desert is pleasant. In this kind of territory, a surrounding exterior is key for life outside. The first action is to raise a roof. Fresh shade provides not only shelter but has also a significant social value. It motivates being in nature and everyday activities.
El Alamein is an olive grove located in this coastal desert. The climatic and scenic forces are capitalised under a single sloping roof that unifies spaces of different qualities – interior living, exterior terraces or pure extension. 16 eucalyptus hardwood poles organize the structural order of the roof and its cover is defined according to the degree of shade and proofing required below. Posts to the ground appear where needed to support the structure and serve as a guide for climbing plants.
Windows with double-jamb wooden frames seal the interiors from sand, especially during dust storms common in the area. Brick is the construction unit of the interior enclosure acting as a load-bearing and thermal mass element. The construction drawing is based on the proportions of the masonry unit in relation to the eucalyptus poles that run along the house connecting all layers of dwelling.
